First Bank of Nigeria Limited has crossed ₦1 trillion in cumulative digital credit disbursements, powered by its retail instant loan engine, FirstAdvance, which now processes over ₦1 billion in automated daily disbursements.  Speaking at the UN Global Compact Network Nigeria CEO Forum 2026 in Lagos, Deputy Managing Director Ini Ebong, representing MD/CEO Olusegun Alebiosu, revealed that automated, collateral-free credit products—including FirstCredit and Agent Credit—are fundamentally reshaping the bank's retail credit profile.

By delivering underwriting decisions and loan disbursements in under 60 seconds without physical collateral, commercial banks are moving aggressively into short-term liquidity provision for salary earners, agents, and micro-merchants.

The shift represents an operational pivot in tier-one retail banking strategy. Historically, retail banking in sub-Saharan Africa suffered from high non-performing loan (NPL) ratios and heavy manual credit assessment costs. Instant digital loans backed by payroll records and cash flow algorithms allow tier-one lenders to earn high risk-adjusted yields on short-dated credit while maintaining sub-minute processing costs.

Beyond retail consumer lending, FirstBank’s agency network—FirstMonie—has grown to 322,460 agent points covering 99% of Nigeria's Local Government Areas. This network has funnelled over 3.4 million previously unbanked citizens into formal accounts, providing the deposit base and transactional data required to underwrite micro-loans at scale.

RAININGMONEY EDITORIAL VIEW(WHY IT MATTERS)

MARKETS: Shows tier-one commercial banks successfully competing with digital loan apps by leveraging payroll data and agency liquidity.

CORPORATE: Proves automated credit can generate high net interest margin (NIM) yields while dramatically lowering acquisition costs.

CONSUMER: Grants instant emergency credit access to salary earners and informal merchants without traditional collateral barriers.

FUTURE RISK: High dependence on algorithmic underwriting creates risk exposure during inflationary cycles or systemic wage stagnation.
