Inside AfriGopay’s Commercial Push to Capture Nigeria’s Grassroots Banking Market
AfriGopay pitched its domestic card scheme (AfriGO) to microfinance bank operators at the 16th NAMB AGM in Abuja to drive adoption among grassroots institutions.

Afrigopay Financial Services Limited is taking its commercial expansion strategy directly to Nigeria’s grassroots lenders. Rather than focusing solely on tier-one commercial banks, the operator of Nigeria's national card scheme, AfriGO, is aggressively targeting the microfinance sector to build transaction volume at scale.
At the 16th Annual General Meeting of the National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB) in Abuja, AfriGopay positioned itself as a core infrastructure partner for hundreds of regional and community lenders.
The commercial rationale for AfriGopay is clear: high-volume, low-value daily transactions across Nigeria's informal economy represent a massive untapped revenue pool. To capture it, the company is offering MFBs end-to-end technical support, streamlined onboarding, and direct integration with its Card Management System (CMS).
By addressing the technical and financial hurdles that previously kept small MFBs from issuing payment cards, AfriGopay is positioning AfriGO to challenge foreign card schemes at the bottom of the pyramid. With endorsement from NAMB National President Dr. Adenrele Oni, AfriGopay’s distribution model could quickly lock in market share across rural and semi-urban retail networks.
