OpenAI has launched virtual try-on and Favorites in ChatGPT. Try-on lets you see clothing or accessories on a photo of yourself. Favorites saves products and your try-on images in one Library. OpenAI says the feature is launching globally.

What Changed

  • Before: ChatGPT could show shopping results, and OpenAI had tried an instant checkout that ended up not performing well.
  • Now: Results carry a Try On button, you can upload an item's screenshot to try on, and you can save products for later.
  • Underneath: A new image model that OpenAI says handles lighting and texture more naturally, follows editing instructions better, and runs faster.

Finance Speak → Human Speak

  • Conversion: a shopper going from browsing to buying. Fashion discovery that turns into sales for retailers is called converting.
  • Discovery: how a shopper first finds a product. Pinterest and Google have led this for fashion.
  • Proactive recommendations: suggestions pushed to you without you asking. Some users felt Instinct's version felt like advertising.

What Caught Our Attention

  1. The strategy shift from finishing the sale (checkout) to helping people decide.
  2. The celebrity outfit feature, which targets how many people actually find clothes to buy.
  3. The photo requirement, which asks users to trust an AI app with a picture of themselves.

The Money Map

Shopper describes a style or uploads a photo → ChatGPT shows products → Shopper tries items on, saves favorites → Shopper buys from the retailer

Where money enters is not stated in the source. We did not find how OpenAI or retailers earn from this.

The Bottom Line

OpenAI has swapped a checkout ambition for a decision-helper. Google already offers virtual try-on, so ChatGPT's edge will have to come from the quality of its images and how well it understands what you ask for.

Does this reach Nigerian shoppers?

If the features are live for your account, you can use them with Nigerian and international shops that appear in the results. We have not confirmed local availability, and results may lean toward overseas retailers.
