Your column. Our platform.

If you understand everyday money and can explain it plainly, RainingMoney will give your voice a permanent, edited, designed home. You bring the opinion. We bring the editing, the design and the audience.

Who it’s for

You don’t need a finance degree. You need something true to say.

Our mission line is simple: the world of money is complicated; understanding it shouldn’t be. If your mum can follow it, you’re writing for us.

Lived experience

Workers, traders, market women, small-business owners, students, tenants, diaspora senders.

Professional insight

Bankers, accountants, economists, HR people, tax practitioners, founders, analysts.

A point of view

You take a position and defend it with facts, not just vibes.

Plain language

You explain without jargon. Short sentences. Real examples. Naira, not abstractions.

Column lanes

Pick a lane. Name your column.

You propose your own column name. It should sit in one of these lanes, or between two. A lane can hold several columnists if their angles differ.

01

Work & Pay

Salaries, wages, the minimum wage, workplace fairness, side hustles.

02

Household Money

Food, rent, transport, school fees: the cost of living.

03

Hustle & Small Business

Running a shop, a kiosk or a startup. Tax, levies, credit.

04

Markets for Everyone

NGX, savings, investing basics, explained. Never tipped.

05

Tech & Money

Fintech, crypto, digital banking, and the scams to avoid.

06

Africa & Diaspora

Remittances, FX, cross-border trade, pan-African economies.

07

Policy & Power

Budgets, taxes, subsidies: what government money decisions mean for you.

YOUR COLUMN

[Your column name]

Tell us the name, the lane, and why you’re the one to write it.

Formats

Short or long. Your call.

Write as long as the idea needs. Word ranges are guidance, not walls.

Take

Under 400 words

One sharp point, made fast. Reacting to the day’s news.

Column

600–1,200 words

The standard: an argument with evidence and a clear ending.

Long Read

1,500+ words

A deep argument in sections. Policy, history, big ideas.

Open Letter

Any length

Addressed to someone: employers, the CBN, landlords, a minister.

The deal

What you get. What we ask.

Plainly stated, so nobody is surprised later.

You get

  • A permanent profile page on therainingmoney.com with your photo, bio, column badge and every piece archived.
  • Your column name, branded, as a series with its own identity on the site and across our social media.
  • Professional editing on every piece. We check facts and clarity; we don’t change your opinion.
  • Designed social assets: Opinion Cards and carousels made from your best lines.
  • A permanent columnist number. Founding columnists are numbered in order, for good.
  • Your own writing desk in the RainingMoney Newsroom, built to work on your phone.

We ask

  • Regular pieces: one every , at any length the idea needs.
  • Original work: your words, your argument, never published elsewhere first.
  • Sourced figures: every number has a source, or is clearly your own experience.
  • Honest deadlines: if you can’t file, tell your editor before the deadline, not after.
  • Your own voice: AI can help with grammar and headlines; it never writes your column.

How it works

From application to first byline.

We take columnists in small intakes so every one of them gets real editing. You’ll hear back either way within .

  1. Apply

Tell us your column name, your pitch, three ideas and two samples of your writing. It takes about 15 minutes.

  2. Shortlist

We read every application. Shortlisted applicants are asked for one trial column, sent by email.

  3. Invite

If you’re accepted, you get a private invite to the RainingMoney Newsroom. You set up your profile and get your columnist number.

  4. Publish

Write on your own desk, submit to your editor, and your column goes live under your name.

Our standards

Strong opinions. Straight facts.

These protect you, our readers and RainingMoney. Every columnist agrees to them.

  1. Opinion is labelled. Every column shows “Views are the author’s own”.
  2. Facts are facts. Opinions can be strong; figures must be right and sourced.
  3. No naming and shaming of private individuals or identifiable small businesses without evidence and editor sign-off.
  4. No investment tips or promotions. Explain how things work; never tell readers to buy a stock, coin or scheme.
  5. Disclose conflicts. If you work for, own or are paid by what you write about, say so.
  6. Argue with ideas, not identities. No hate, no harassment.
  7. Corrections are public. If we get something wrong, we fix it openly.
  8. You keep your copyright. We get the right to publish first. Full terms are in the Columnist Agreement.
Questions

Before you apply

Do I need a finance or journalism background?

No. Lived experience counts as much as qualifications. What we need is a clear point of view and the ability to explain it in plain language. Our editors help with the rest.

Is this paid?

How much time does it take?

One piece every . A Take might take an hour; a Long Read, a weekend. You choose the format for each piece.

Can I write for other outlets too?

Yes. We only ask that pieces you write for RainingMoney are original and published with us first.

Do I have to live in Nigeria?

No. The role is remote. Writers across Africa and the diaspora are welcome, as long as the column speaks to our readers’ money lives.

What happens if I’m not selected?

You’ll hear from us either way. We run intakes regularly, and many strong applicants are invited back in a later round.

Can I stop later?

Yes, with notice. Your published columns stay online under your name.
